5 Top Tips For Caring For Your Wood Floors Over Winter

Winter brings a whole host of challenges for wood floors. The cold, wet weather and increased use of heating can take it’s toll on their natural beauty and longevity. We know that protecting your investment starts with proper care. Here are five expert tips to help your wood floors remain as beautiful as the day they were installed.

Tip 1.

Maintain Stable Humidity Levels

Wood floors are sensitive to changes in humidity. As winter heating dries out the air, the wood can shrink or crack. We recommend using a hygrometer to help maintain the humidity levels between 45% and 65%. This simple step protects your floors and ensures they stay beautiful all year round. Hygrometers are widely available, very affordable and very simple to use. For controlling humidity the use of simple humidifiers or dehumidifiers can be used, adding house plants to your space is a fantastic idea for both you and your floor or even just a simple bowl of water placed in the room with better ventilation and temperature control will do the trick.

Tip 2.

Prevent Avoidable Damage

Snow, rain, and mud can wreak havoc on wood floors. The use of a good quality mat at entryways and encouraging family members and guests to remove wet footwear will go a long way in minimising any problems. A little prevention goes a long way in keeping your floors looking great and easy to maintain.

Tip 3.

Clean Regularly

Dust and dirt can scratch wood floors, so regular cleaning is essential. Sweep or vaccum your floor with a soft bristled broom or soft brush attachement to remove any grit and dust. Once thats done a light mop is all you’ll need to keep your wood floor in great condition. Clean your floor with our Clean and Care product. Using a spray bottle, spray your floor and work into any marks with an applicator pad or you can use a traditional mop, but ensure this is well wrung and remove any excess liquid immeditaly.

Tip 4.

Add Protective Rugs and Runners

Adding an area rug or runner to high traffic areas such as a Hallway or Lounge is a great way to prevent accidental damage to your floor and they are a great way to add to the overall look of the floor in your space.

Tip 5.

Refresh and Protect

Over time, even the most well-cared-for wood floors may begin to lose their sheen. If your floors look dull or worn, this is a great time to consider refreshing them. We recommend using our Refresh and Protect Oil. Simply give your floor a good clean and once dry, applying a light application of oil will help you get the most out of your floor. It’s easy to apply, and quick to dry. This process restores your floors natural beauty and ensures they continue to add value to your home.
