A Guide To Wood Grades.
Grading is the system used to reflect the amount of natural characteristics within the boards. Due to the natural variation in wood, each plank is carefully assessed for the amount of natural features such as grain, colour variety, knots, sapwood, heartwood, cracks, flecks and rays and then given a designated grade. Grading is a staged process that begins by firstly selecting the tree trunks, visually selecting the cut raw material and finally, once the timber has been kiln dried and produced into individual planks they are then separated according to their grades. Each wood manufacturer will use a different grading system, the process is done by eye and as this not an exact science, there is always some variation allowed. Understanding our different types of grades is essential as this will determine the overall look of your floor. Let’s explore the different grades and the individual features that make up character.
Choosing the Right Grade
Noble
Our cleanest grade, these boards will contain very minimal sapwood and no heartwood. You will only find small knots up to approx. 15mm diameter with relatively small colour variation between boards. Perfect for modern or ultra modern spaces.
Origin
Origin grade allows for more of the natural characteristics to shine through. Small amounts of sapwood and hints of heartwood. These boards will show natural colour variation and allow knots up to 60mm. Perfect in any space.
Character
A more rustic grade allowing for the true character of the oak to be admired. Unlimited knots, both open and sound, cracks and splits along the face and the ends. Unlimted sapwood and heartwood allowed and a wider range of colour variation. Well suited to more traditional spaces.
Natural Wood Character in More Detail
Sapwood.
Sapwood is the outer part of the trunk below the bark. It is the younger softer portion of the tree, usually identifiable as lighter in colour than the rest of the wood and normally found on the edges of planks.
Heartwood.
Heartwood is found at the core of the tree and is the older, harder portion of the trunk. It is usually darker than the rest of the timber with a tighter grain. Normally found in more rustic characterful grades.
Knots.
Knots, a beautiful feature, are the visible remnant of branches that once sprouted out from the tree trunk. They are harder, darker and with a much tighter grain. Knots are found in all grades of wood with the knot content being controlled in the grading process. These can be broken and filled or closed, various colours can be used to fill the knots, white, greys, browns and black.
