A Guide To Surface Textures.

Wood by its very nature is packed full of unique characteristics from its colour variety, knots, sapwood and heartwood. It’s refined grain structure lends itself to a wide variety of finishing techniques enabling us to hand craft the most beautiful floors. By using these techniques we can enhance the natural beauty of the wood.

Adding different surface textures to compliment the woods overall look not only changes the way the wood looks but also how it feels. It’s important to understand the different textures and how they effect the overall look of your floor. Each texture adds a different look and finding the right balance is essential to getting the right style for your space.

Smooth.

Each board is finely sanded for a smooth surface finish, ensuring any machining or sanding marks are removed. Creating a beautiful uniform look for a contemporary feel.

Planed.

Each board is carefully planed by hand, giving the boards very fine planer marks for a subtle, authentic worn look. The open texture of the grain allows for the pigments in the colour tones that are then applied to settle unevenly, resulting in an interesting finish.

Brushed.

Using a variety of wire brushing techniques the softer parts of the grain are removed exposing the harder grain in the board highlighting the stunning natural beauty of the woods complex grain patterns. You decide on the intensity from light brushing for a subtle look or more heavily brushed options to really accentuate the grain pattern creating a more prominent texture.

Sawn.

Used to replicate the look of cut timber. By adding light and heavy saw marks to the surface you can add a distinct rough look to the boards enhancing the rustic feel.

Distressed.

For an authentic aged look the boards are put through a unique distressing process replicating the natural wear and tear you would find in a reclaimed or aged wood floor. Creating a surface with random dents, scratches and marks across the board and edges adds a unique depth and definition to your floor.

Worn.

To further enhance the look of an aged floor the wood is hand worked, drawing on a variety of techniques such as heavy sanding and rolled edges to add an irregular, smoothed and undulating finish to really emphasise the aged worn feel. For a smoother worn look this can be achieved without adding the distressing process but typically both work in harmony.

Torn.

A unique finish showing off the natural beauty of Oak and its stunning grain patterns. By splitting the wood and tearing the grain in a completely natural way rather than sawing, we achieve a special surface texture exposing the complex grain structure developed over years and natural undulation which cannot be replicated artificially. Available in 8 different tone choices to perfectly match any interior.
